AI-generated search summaries can reduce click-throughs and sometimes surface wrong or scammy contact details. Treat AI Overviews (AIO) as a new channel for operational risk: monitor, harden content, and map mitigations to accepted risk frameworks.
AI Overviews (AIO) and other AI summaries are actively reshaping where clicks land and what users see at first glance. Recent log-level analysis by Pew Research shows visits with an AI summary click on links much less often than visits without one. That reduction changes traffic mix and raises the stakes when a summary contains inaccurate or harmful facts. Leaders must use evidence, such as traffic impact, citation mix and incidence logs, to steer content investment and risk controls.
AIOs have already been implicated in scams where generated overviews pointed users to fraudulent phone numbers, producing real financial harm in reported cases. Hallucinations, such as incorrect facts or dates, remain common and erode trust. Meanwhile, regulatory timelines such as obligations for general-purpose models are now live, so marketing and support mistakes carry legal as well as reputational risk.
Keep a running incident log of topic and brand queries that produce harmful outputs (wrong contacts, unsafe advice). Monitor bias and coverage gaps by entity, geography and language so underserved audiences aren’t misrepresented. Maintain a regulatory clock tied to the EU AI Act (or other similar acts in your country) milestones and map internal controls to recognised frameworks.
Brand-safe SERP tests. Build a weekly set of danger-prone queries (support numbers, payments, cancellations) and run them through major search providers and LLMs (large language models). Flag any AIO that surfaces contact details and validate against your canonical sources before amplifying.
Content hardening. Add an “official contact” component (structured data and an in-page badge) and consolidate details on a canonical contact page to reduce fragmentation. Make that page machine-readable so models can find and cite the definitive source.
Governance mapping. Map mitigations to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) AI RMF (AI Risk Management Framework) functions, that include govern, map, measure, manage, and keep a compliance watchlist. Regularly test controls and log outcomes for audit and continuous improvement.
Disclosure & feedback loops. Publish a machine-readable authenticity file (e.g., /llms.txt) and provide easy feedback channels; triage and file corrections rapidly so signals propagate back into provider pipelines.
Purpose: prove the mitigation works. Each week run the danger-prone query set and record whether any AIO shows a phone number. If AIO shows a number, confirm ownership. If it’s wrong, file provider feedback, publish the machine-readable contact page, and mark the incident in the log with source, timestamp and action taken.
