Hi
I am Seema Malhotra.
I launched my website back in 2012. And I quickly understood that SEO was going to be a major part of my website’s success. So, I tried to learn as much as I could. And thanks to years of reading and experimenting, I have had a ton of success with SEO.
But, with the current pandemic, I realised that SEO has become more critical than ever. Let me explain with some data.
As we know, “internet use” has skyrocketed during the pandemic. But “internet use” does not only belong to online search. In addition, it includes a wide variety of activities such as electronic transfers, virtual meetings, gaming, social media, movie streaming and many more.
The above graph shows that online search has not increased. In a time marked by so many questions, search volume certainly has a focus on health and other relevant industries. As a result, this has caused a decline in traffic to non-essential business websites from both paid and organic results.
The above chart was an eye-opener. Without any further delay, I decided to find new ways to enhance my SEO efforts. I came across backlinks. And, I researched further to understand the importance of backlinks for SEO.
What are backlinks?
Backlinks are created when one website links to another website. For instance, if a travel site (Website A) links to a blog post comparing the best rental options (Website B), then the travel website receives a vote of confidence or backlink from the rental site.
Types of backlinks- Natural and Paid
Natural backlinks are earned when
- Companies link to their other brands in their footers or their main navigation
- Also, when you are a blogger and have a list of resources
- You are producing a lot of photo content, and the website uses your work across numerous posts
- You do something newsworthy
Paid backlinks are earned when
- You provide databases and feeds to sell products on other sites that link to your site
- Have bloggers that create a store without “nofollow” attributes on their links
- Banner ads, widgets, feeds, and badges with keyword-rich backlinks
- Use scholarships
- Someone leaves comments on blogs, forums, or community websites
- Keyword-rich links to category pages or products
Are backlinks important for SEO?
Yes, they are. Backlinks influence your website rankings and thus, they are vital for your business’s online success.. If your website provides high-quality, relevant content that people want to see, then many good websites are keen to link to your site. As a result, the website with a better inbound link profile will outrank content from competitors with inferior profiles. Furthermore, if your inbound link profile is right, then your company itself will soar to new heights. That’s why link building is a critical component for SEO.
SEO Backlink strategy
- Make a list
Just think about your buyer personas and what they are reading. Based on the information, make a list of websites you want the referral traffic from.
- Narrow it down
Rank them on domain authority, social authority, and relevance to your services and the persona.
- Create a pitch
First impressions play a crucial role. So, make sure you have a well-thought-out pitch when you are submitting your ideas. While creating the pitch, think about the other articles on the site, the readers, and most importantly, the person you’re pitching to.
- Optimize the article
Once you get a positive response, keep the editor and readers of the site in mind while writing. Ask for guidelines and choose a call-to-action for your site’s blog articles.
After my extensive research and study on backlinks, I implemented them in my SEO campaigns. And, I saw excellent results. The ranking of my website improved on Google, which, in turn, increased referral traffic.
